Idina Menzel - Defying Gravity
The composition seems to be a kind of farewell or a letter expressing rebellion. At first glance, or maybe
after listening it for the first time (because this is a song) we can say
that it is a farewell to previous life. The words: “Something has changed within me/
Something is not the same”, suggest, that in the life of a lyric subject, who is a woman, something had happened that changed her previous view
of the world. Maybe
it was getting the courage in order to reject her love and feelings that “It comes at much too high a cost”. And it's not about financial costs, but
the contribution
of feelings
and emotions and in principle the cost of a compromise between the feeling and the constraints of the world and the beloved. The words of the song suggest that the love of the lyrical subject was limited, therefore she decided
to rebel against obeying
the rules and pretending to be someone else. She has enough restrictions and limits, things that are apparently fixed and immutable. It’s time for the lyric subject to realize
her own desires and dreams, to rise
above the limitations of this world, beyond the limits
of love and the person whom she adores. Therefore,
she says goodbye to her beloved, whose feeling is compared to the
enormous force of gravity. Maybe he is a person that constrains the lyrical
subject by his possessiveness, disbelief in her strength and capabilities, or
perhaps he is a restriction in himself , as a person with whom the lyrical subject must
consult all decisions, even about her own future. She farewells to with him and
kisses goodbye, announcing that it was the end of restrictions on his part: “And you won't bring me down”.
This
step will allow the lyrical subject control her lifes, that is, to have unlimited
power over it.
The lyrical
subject has the feeling that her future is unlimited, without barriers and borders, that she can do with it what she wants. She will overcome gravity and will fly, or float in the sky of her dreams, which
she will satisfies.
The lyrical subject also calls for her beloved, to let her fulfill her desires “As someone told me lately/
Everyone deserves the/ chance to fly!". So that's why "defying
gravity!"
